Computer Fundamentals                 MED01                                                           66 Hours

This course is an introduction to the use of the computer in business.  Students will write letters, create forms, and format documents in Microsoft Word.  This course will also include creating and formatting spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel.  Included in the course will be printing documents, performing basic research on the Internet and effectively using the tools available in Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Business Communication             MED02                                                                      36 Hours

Students will learn the meaning and importance of writing coherently, concisely, and with purpose using correct grammar and acceptable writing techniques.  Practice in using cross-cultural awareness skills, verbal and nonverbal communication, listening skills, and professional telephone technique will also prepare the students to interact with patients, suppliers and co-workers.

This course includes the fundamentals of mathematics including consumer mathematics, decimals, percents, and fractions.  Students will be able to handle monetary transactions and do routine business calculations.

Accounting and Collections               MED04                                                                18 Hours

Students will learn basic terms and principles that businesses use to record business transactions in  single and double-entry bookkeeping systems.  Students receive an introduction to source documents and financial forms in the medical office.  The students will also learn the fundamentals of collection laws, techniques, and correspondence.

Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology                MED05                                  102 Hours
Lecture: 102 Hours

This course covers word building rules, prefixes, suffixes and whole body terminology.  Students will learn terms covering anatomy and physiology, pathological conditions, and diagnostic treatments and procedures.  Terms relating to each body system and medical specialty are included. The students will learn detailed descriptions and explanations of the structures, functions, and interrelated processes of the human body. The students will learn to relate each of these items to specific medical procedures.

Medical Coding and Billing                                              MED07                                   102 Hours

In this course the students will learn and practice the fundamentals of the CPT-4 and ICD-9-CM coding systems.  The students will learn and practice Evaluation and Management coding, procedural coding from each section of the CPT-4 manual, in addition to diagnosis and procedural coding utilizing the ICD-9-CM volumes 1, 2, and 3.  Students will be introduced to the HCPCS level II and ICD-10 coding systems.

Computerized Medical Office          MED09                                                                 36 Hours

Students in this course will use popular medical records management software in a simulated medical office.

Medical Law  and Ethics                                              MED10                                     18 Hours

This course covers federal and state health care legislation and regulations.  Students will learn to maintain confidentiality, document accurately, use appropriate guidelines when releasing information and comply with established risk management and safety procedures.

Medical Billing Forms and Claims                                   MED11                                  66 Hour

This course introduces the application of billing techniques, delinquent claims and credit and collections.  Students will learn to process insurance claims for common health insurance plans to facilitate reimbursement.

Personal Development                         MED12                                                               24 Hours

This course enables the student to develop the ability to work as a team member, manage time effectively and prioritize and perform multiple tasks.  The students will practice practical applications of job hunting, resume writing, interviewing, setting career goals, networking and effective communication.

Externship                                                 MED13                                                              120 Hours
 
 Upon completion of MED01 through MED12 the students participate in an Externship at an approved medical facility. The Externship enables students to work in the medical environment and apply the principles and practices learned in the classroom. Externs work under the direct supervision of qualified personnel in participating facilities and under the supervision of a person with appropriate instructor credentials.

Prerequisite: MED01, MED02, MED03, MED04, MED05, MED07, MED09, MED10, MED11, and MED12

Medical Transcription                        MED14                                                              102 Hours
Lecture: 42 Hours                               Lab: 60 Hours

This course is designed to introduce the student to the fundamentals of medical transcription.  Students will learn to take dictation from medical professionals and record it on a computer in an appropriate format.  Laboratory hours will be spent in practicing transcription of sample medical items.
